Huacaya Alpacas

Excellence in Conformation, Color, Disposition, Fiber

Alpacas are fiber- producing members of the Camelid family, raised for their soft and luxurious fiber.

Alpacas play a major role in South America where they are raised in the high Andean Plateau of Peru, Chili and Bolivia.  They were a cherished treasure of the ancient Incan civilization and played a central role in the Incan culture.  Alpacas have been domesticated for over 5000 years. Alpacas cashmere-like fleece is softer, stronger and warmer than wool and contains no lanolin.  This, cashmere-like fleece, once reserved for Incan royalty, is now enjoyed by spinners and weavers around the world.  Alpaca fiber is rare and valuable and comes in more vibrant colors than any other animal fiber on earth.

There are two distinct types of Alpacas:  Huacaya (wah-ki-ah) and Suri (surrey).  90% of the North American herd is made up of Huacaya.  The difference between Huacaya and Suri is their fiber.  Huacayas have a "teddy bear" appearance due to the crimp or waviness quality of the fleece, which enhances its use in spinning.  Suri fleece has little or no crimp, so the individual fiber strands cling to themselves and hang down in beautiful pencil locks, resembling dreadlocks.

Compared to other livestock, caring for Alpacas is relatively easy.  They are modified ruminants and graze on grass pasture.  Alpacas are relatively inexpensive to maintain and eat surprisingly little - about 2  lbs. of hay or grass per day.  Alpacas have no front top teeth and do not bite, and have soft padded, earth friendly feet.  They have a wonderful personality.  They are seldom sick and usually give birth unassisted.

Many types of people own Alpacas.  Many breeders are retired people who see Alpacas as both enjoyable and profitable.  Some have them strictly for the investment and tax advantages.

No matter how you put it, we at River Bluff Alpacas think it's A Wonderful Lifestyle and A Huggable Investment.
